Six new athletics records
Six more meet records were shattered as the 10th Sabah Games (SAGA) athletics competition came to a successful end yesterday.
KOTA KINABALU: Six more meet records were sha ered as the 10th Sabah Games (SAGA) athletics competition came to a successful end yesterday.
In all, 10 new records were set a er four days of track and field actions at the Tuaran Sports Complex.
Hizillawanty Jamain of Keningau justified her status as the state’s top middle distance runner when she clocked 4:59.81s to erase the old mark of 5:10.59s set by fellow state athlete Marlin Hing William in 2017.
Hizillawanty, who won the 800m gold in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2022, defeated Nur Denisha Shazliate Abdullah of Kalabakan (5:27.57s) and Nur Syifa Raisha Adnan Firdaus of Kota Kinabalu in 5:35.25s in the women’s 1,500m final.
There was also a new record in the men’s 1,500m event when Lahad Datu athlete Nikos Tai Lee Onn crossed the finish line in 4:17.12s to beat the previous best by Romieo Gomboh Kota Kinabalu in 4:17.70s.
Muhammad Naque Misnan of Putatan (4:26.86s) and Mohammad Ahsan A a Ur Rahman of Beaufort (4:28.41s) se led for silver and bronze respectively.
In the 400m, Kuala Penyu’s onelap sprint specialist Muhammad Khalil Helmi clocked 48.70s to smash Keningau’s Anchois Aron’s mark of 49.58s, which has stood for 12 years.
Aubrey Aron of Keningau came in second with 50.94s followed by Muhammad Firdaus Darus Salam of Kalabakan in 51.06s.
Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam, Mukhriz Ameer Izzudin Abdul Rauf, Muhammad Fahami Samsudin and Dexter Palmin made sure Sandakan clinch a second from men’s relay, winning the 4x400m in a record time of 3:25.92s. The old record of 3:26.03s was set by Keningau in 2011.
Pengiran, Ameer and Dexter are part of Sandakan’s quartet that won the 4x100m gold three days ago.
Penampang (William Peter, Mohamad Razy Hafizul Mohamad, Mohamad Razhafiefie Razelie, Edrick Feivel Florentius) in 3:28.35s and Kalabakan (Akmal Rizal Andy Remy Ihsan, Muhammad Firdaus Darus Salam, Kashmeer Samsuri, Airiel Amani Kahar) in 3:30.43s finished with the silver and bronze in the 400m relay.
The other two records yesterday came from the field events namely men’s discus, which was won by Kunak’s Pang Hong Seng with 13.55m, beating Mirach Han of Tawau 2019’s winning distance of 13.35m.
Nathaniel Majid of Penampang also be ered the meet record with 13.40m but se led for second followed by Victer Ben Salleh @ Bindik of Keningau with 11.55m.
In the women’s triple jump event, all three medalists be ered the old record of 11.31m set by Jatifah Gesikin in 2015.
Abby Allysca Lausin of Kudat however was the official new record holder a er her golden effort of 11.72m. Dayang Shari Uluk of Kota Marudu se led for the silver with 11.53m while Carefina Dian Eldy of Kudat in third place with 11.49m.
The earlier four records were set by Tambunan trio of Abernetha Elissa Tadius (women’s 110m hurdles), Dexter Bedie (men’s 200m set in semifinal) and Hanssen Yap Soon Fu (men’s 100m) while the other one was by Ku Yee Aleng of Kunak (women’s high jump).
Meanwhile, record holder Dexter completed a remarkable SAGA by winning the men’s 200m gold.
Dexter, who also won the 100m silver, crossed the finish line in 22.09s followed by Edrick (22.34s) and Mohammad Arief Aiman of Lahad Datu (22.43s).
Esther Joanne Ailos of Tuaran, on the other hand won the women’s 200m in 26.64s while Shayna Heather Tahing of Penampang (27.12s) and Siti Nur Nadiah Mohammad Din of Keningau (27.52s) took the bronze.
The other gold medal winners yesterday were Mary Jane Juberin of Keningau (women’s discus - 37m), Priscellona Grace Kifli @ Hailary of Sipitang (women’s 400m - 60.01s), Mark Paladius of Tambunan (men’s triple jump - 13.91m), Mohammad Hisyam Abdul Razak of Kunak (men’s javelin - 53.02m), Ellyvia Kinol of Ranau (women’s shot pu - 10.19m), Ledia Engku of Ranau (women’s 3,000m steeplechase - 13:26.61s),
Muhammad Naque Misnan of Putatan (men’s 3,000m steeplechase - 10:44.92s) and the Tuaran quartet of Joeiviviean, Esther, Junily Beatly Baking and Nia Jovic Suan in the women 4x400m (4:15.61s).
